Meet Your Tutor

I am a qualified maths teacher (former KS5 Co-ordinator, GCSE Curriculum and IB Diploma Programme Subject Lead) and a private tutor with BEng and MSc degrees, PGCE in mathematics (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) and top A-level equivalent grades in maths. I have over 15 years of teaching and tutoring experience at all levels from secondary through to GCSE and A Levels or equivalents and the vast majority of my students have achieved or exceeded their goals and passed their examinations.

I am a fluent speaker of multiple languages and offer Polish language lessons for English, Russian and Spanish speakers as well as English as a Foreign Language lessons for Polish, Russian and Spanish speakers.

My Teaching Philosophy

I take great pride in my profession and am extremely passionate about the power of maths. Through my experience as a teacher and private tutor, I have assembled a suitable mix of teaching philosophies that are both engaging and effective for my students. The beauty about private tuition is that we do not have to fit every student into the same system, but instead can use more impactful personalised tutoring programmes.

These methods are reflected not only in the way I approach topics and break them down but also in the selection of resources and in the teaching sequence. I strive to bring together the best of a few worlds and students often tell me they have never been taught like this before and that I help them understand what is going on ‘behind the scenes’ rather than simply memorise formulas or type them into the calculator.

IB’s (International Baccalaureate®) inquiry-based approach has a strong emphasis on students researching information and building their own understanding through investigation and discovery. The teacher – often referred to as the ‘meddler in the middle’ – ensures higher-order thinking takes place in lessons to promote reasoning and problem-solving. Concepts are tested and explored helping students develop a deep interdisciplinary understanding of maths and make links to real-life contexts and applications by connecting the knowledge to their own experiences and to the world around them. You should find this all in my teaching alongside more standard methods such as direct instruction.

So don’t be surprised with objects being (safely) dropped, pushed, or thrown across the room, with the teacher moving around and demonstrating, with students experimenting, being involved in some kind of ‘magic’, or simply ’banned’ from (mis)using calculators, but instead talking through maths problems without even putting pen to paper.

My Experience

I spent the first few years of my professional teaching career at schools in West and Central London as a maths teacher working with students across a wide range of ages and abilities including KS3/4, GCSE, AS, A Level, FM, and IB. My experience in private tuition spans nearly two decades and covers all levels alongside final exam preparation with my latest personal best so far – 3 grades up in under six months.

My classroom practice has always been well-regarded and described as consistently good while planning and management as exemplary. I worked closely with department heads on results improvements including data analysis, delivery of interventions as well as curriculum changes and resourcing. I also received a mention from the IB Organisation for my curriculum work which was a significant contribution to the speedy set-up of a new IB school.

I can provide key information and advice with regard to mathematics-related degrees, courses, and qualifications with an emphasis on the application of mathematics and statistics in engineering, business, and finance supported by years of my own real-life work experience in multiple industries in the UK and overseas. I am also well-positioned to act as a consultant for the delivery of maths teaching and intervention programs in schools and colleges.
